On her fifth birthday we asked her what she wanted to do. She wanted to bake a cake and share it with her friends. We dropped her off at Ritu's place where she baked an orange cake. We also edited a picture of each of her classmates with her and made a cardboard photo frame with a satin ribbon to hang it with. She loved sharing it with her friends. They were excited to get a gift too.
We also had a little party at home. She wore the frock that Abi sent and we called all teh friends that she wanted to call and danced to "Oru Kodam Thanni uttu Oru pooo Poothudham...". We had a cake that she described to the baker. It had a river going through and a house with a farm on one side. She and Rishika wore similar frocks and were looking like sisters.
We were quite apprehensive about "schooling" -- brainwashing. We felt each child was different. Education meant a lot more than academics. It had to prepare you for life. It had to address the body, mind, emotions and soul. It had to be in the lap of nature. It had to be in a situation where there is no fear. It had to inculcate the love of learning. Lakshmi started at Mirambika in 2008 when she was four years old. Here they believe that education for the adult and that the child is perfect.

Singing for 45 minutes...
After 6 months of singing Lakshmi sat for 45 mins at a shot and sang. She sang all the sargams that she had been listening to and I did not know that she knew.
She sang Raag Yaman with the aarohan and avarohan and pakkad and bandish. Dur Dipo Bashini, a Nuzrul Geeti and Mere Shyam a Meera Bhajan. She is quite proud of her singing now.
