Mirambika's birthday

The 15th of July is Mirambika's birthday. I have been asking didi what they are going to do. Didi says they have been talking about what they like about Mirambika and drawing that. They have been talking about what a birthday is. I saw her drawings in school. She has drawn the duck pond from two perspectives --- the squares from the top and the Banyan tree from the side.

What a range of drawings...

This summer Lakshmi's drawings have taken a leap...After a visit to the farm where she saw Robby bounding across the fields she came home and wished that she could be a dog. So we decided to start a series of drawing called "I wish I could be...". Manju aunty had a pair of parrots at home for a while. So she drew a Parrot and wished she could be a Parrot. She went to the Garden of Five Senses with Alpana and her dad and went on a camel ride. She came back home and drew a camel! (it looked pretty much like a camel too...) and wished she could be a camel.

Then there was an exhibition of Devi Prasad's sculpture, Pottery and drawings. Alpana and I decided to take Urvee and Lakshmi. She asked me to draw his tea pots and suddenly she was shading with a pencil. We drew a Nataraja. Then she wanted to draw a horse.

One day we sat down and started a story book. The main character was a little girl called Anisa (after Raju's grand daughter). She illustrated and and continued her story for eleven pages. She innovated a way of continuing. We wrote a paragraph and she illustrated it. And then she asked me to read it. She then drew the next figure in the next page and we wrote the next paragraph. Then I would read out both the paragraphs. This process went on for two hours. This was our holiday homework for the summer.

In Chennai she kept drawing laptops because everyone at home there was a gizmo freak. In Bangalore we went to somebody's house and they had an antique telephone. So we drew a range of telephones from modern to antique. At Suchin's house she drew an India Map.

When we got back she has started drawing human figures. She overhears conversations and makes exactly what the situation is. When Vish traveled to the US she overheard that they had a new house and that Vinod was Gardening. So she drew herself and Kirtan holding hands and waving to neighbours across the road. Their house was in the background. It had little potted plants and lamps.

Kaustabh's birthday was one of the hottest days in Delhi. So drew herself and Kaustabh wearing boots and standing in a puddles while it was raining heavily. For Yeshua's birthday she drew Pratibha holding hands with Yeshua on one side and herself on the other. She said Pratibha's (a fashion designer) dress has to be very nice and drew her a beautiful dress and coloured it in psychedelic broad stripes. An extra face became a mask hanging on the wall. She drew Avni and also wrote that she was beautiful and shone like a star. She was drawing Thai dancers one day.

We made a card for Aditi because her baby brother was born. She drew Aditi sitting on a rock. There were mountains in the background and a lagoon in the foreground. Her baby brother was swimming in the shallows. There was a rope protecting him from the deep waters. There was a camera in the front through which his mother was taking his pictures.

Yesterday she made two cards. One for the music master where he had a harmonium in his lap and she was sitting on a stool listening. In the night she made her dad's office! it had a turbine -- an electricity machine, lifts, an escalator, a table with a telephone, dining hall, cabins, an ATM with a dish on top and the windows were open because there was no power...

We will continue making cards or drawings for people till she gets bored.

The Zambesi story

Today Lakshmi and I had a spat...she lost it and pushed the computer screen...I too in turn lost it with her and she howled!

Later in the day when we were writing stories she wanted to write about the "angry Zambesi" which she had seen on TV while we were in Bangalore...

There was a small river called Zambesi and there was big River called Zambesi...Once the big Zambesi got angry and dantoed the small Zambesi. Then suddenly the small river turned big and the big river was surprised and it stopped shouting...

Was she calling me a bully?

Then ofcourse it rained and the big Zambesi protected the small Zambesi...and so on...

Lakshmi's fifth birthday...

On her fifth birthday we asked her what she wanted to do. She wanted to bake a cake and share it with her friends. We dropped her off at Ritu's place where she baked an orange cake. We also edited a picture of each of her classmates with her and made a cardboard photo frame with a satin ribbon to hang it with. She loved sharing it with her friends. They were excited to get a gift too.

We also had a little party at home. She wore the frock that Abi sent and we called all teh friends that she wanted to call and danced to "Oru Kodam Thanni uttu Oru pooo Poothudham...". We had a cake that she described to the baker. It had a river going through and a house with a farm on one side. She and Rishika wore similar frocks and were looking like sisters.

Singing for 45 minutes...

After 6 months of singing Lakshmi sat for 45 mins at a shot and sang. She sang all the sargams that she had been listening to and I did not know that she knew.

She sang Raag Yaman with the aarohan and avarohan and pakkad and bandish. Dur Dipo Bashini, a Nuzrul Geeti and Mere Shyam a Meera Bhajan. She is quite proud of her singing now.
